Veteran-Led Seminar Helps Military Families Build Financial Resilience

Serving in uniform impacts more than the service member—it shapes the entire family. As military families navigate deployments, transitions, and life after service, access to the right resources can make all the difference.

Retired U.S. Navy Chief Warrant Officer Angel Torres and retired U.S. Army Colonel Steve Parker delivered a seminar designed to help Navy Reservists and their families strengthen their financial knowledge and resilience. The presentation was part of a military reintegration and family support event centered on education, connection, and resources.

Drawing on their own military service and years of advising veterans and their families, Torres and Parker offered actionable guidance aimed at building long-term financial stability.

"The opportunity to make a meaningful impact is what drives us," Torres said. "The program is designed to provide veterans with practical tools to strengthen financial competency and support overall family well-being."

Parker pointed to a challenge many households share. "Financial conversations can be difficult for many couples," he said. "Our goal is to provide education, in a relaxed setting, that helps families navigate those discussions with greater confidence."

Attendees praised the session for its practical, real-world perspective and for the credibility that comes from presenters who have served themselves.

"Having subject matter experts who have actually worn the uniform provides invaluable insight into what works financially for military families," said attendee Shannon Heberling (USN Ret). "The presenters understand the unique challenges service members and their families face, because they've lived them themselves. Their experience and relevant insights made the discussion relatable."

Reflecting on the session's impact, Heberling stressed the value of reaching a wider audience. "I hope more military families across the country have the opportunity to benefit from this resource," he added.

Torres and Parker are now expanding their seminar to communities nationwide. With multiple presentations already scheduled in partnership with veteran and military organizations, the pair remains committed to equipping service members, veterans, and their families with financial education and resources.

Their mission extends beyond dollars and cents. Through each seminar, they hope to keep strengthening the military community—one conversation, one presentation, and one family at a time.

"We understand the challenges that come with military life and transition," Torres said. "When we give service members and their loved ones the tools to communicate and make informed decisions, we are helping build a foundation that supports them long after their time in uniform."
